It made me feel like what I wanted – to go from home to work with a quick stop at Starbucks on the way, without being harassed – didn’t matter. What mattered most was that this man had an opinion about me, so I had to hear it whether I wanted to or not. He wanted to touch me, so I was going to be touched, by a stranger, whether I wanted it or not.”

- Why do strange men think they’re allowed to touch me? (via colporteur)

Photo

"A person is sexually objectified when her sexual parts or sexual functions are separated out from..."

““A person is sexually objectified when her sexual parts or sexual functions are separated out from the rest of her personality and reduced to the status of mere instruments or else regarded as if they were capable of representing her.””

-
-Bartkey.

Women can be sexual without being sexually objectified. This is the difference between sexual liberation and sexual objectification. Why I think society is okay with plastering women in thongs in advertisements to sell practically everything, but not okay with a woman demanding affordable access to birth control. We’ll use women’s sexuality for money, but we’re not okay discussing women actually having sex on their own terms?

A woman should be able to walk down the street at 4 in the morning in nothing but her socks, blind drunk, without being assaulted, and I, for one, am not going to do anything to imply that she is in any way responsible for her own assault if she fails to Adequately Protect Herself. Men aren’t helpless dick-driven maniacs who can’t help raping a vulnerable woman. It disrespects EVERYONE.””

-

Emily Nagoski. no idea who she is, but i thank her. there is no excuse for rape and anyone who excuses it is insulting both the victim and the rapist. (via rapeisnotajoke)

There are two arguments I’ve noticed

“Women should prepare themselves better if they don’t want to get raped”

ALL MEN AREN’T RAPISTS/Its not fair that women accuse me of being a rapist/i get called creepy all the time

So basically we have to prepare ourselves all the time, but if we ever give a man the sense that we view them as a misogynistic/violent threat - that’s unfair

hmm…

Growing up with that sort of ‘dirty secret’ can be a lonely experience; but finding a whole sub-community of dedicated porn-makers who not only shared my kink, but actively celebrated it and acted out the same fantasies, helped me to realize I wasn’t some twisted freak. At least not for that reason. If porn can help kids realize that their urges are natural and healthy, that’s not a bad thing in my book.

The diversity of adult entertainment is so great that just talking about ‘porn’ as if it’s one big pink throbbing homogeneous mass is profoundly ignorant, whether its the subject of a campaign or a research question. For example, a paper by Michael Flood suggests “exposure to pornography helps to sustain young people’s adherence to sexist and unhealthy notions of sex and relationships,” but would we see the same impact from Maggie Mayhem’s feminist porn that we would from Playboy?

Lumping the two together is like trying to ask, “do video games make people violent,” without bothering to differentiate between the Grand Theft Auto series and Pacman. It undermines research, but more seriously it can lead people to tackle the wrong problem. It could well be true, for example, that the majority of porn reinforces misogynistic attitudes, and that this could damage young children as a result; but if that’s the case then the problem is misogyny, not pornography, and it needs to be tackled wherever it appears, not just in the adult entertainment industry.”

- Porn panic! | Martin Robbins | The Lay Scientist | Science | guardian.co.uk (via sexisnottheenemy)

"That was the hardest day of my life. It’s something I don’t even want to watch. If I even click on it on TV, I have to click it off or I’ll put my foot through the screen… What you see on that screen is just my terror at having to do that scene. There’s not really any acting going on and I haven’t watched the scene. I’ve seen little clips. You know, ‘previously on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.’ They show it sometimes and I’m always like, ‘Oh, God.’ … The writers are fabulous, but when I showed up on set that day I told them: ‘Sometimes you guys just don’t know what you do. You just do not know what you’re asking us…’ I’m proud of it artistically, but as a human being I never, never, never want to do a scene like that again and I will always refuse because I know what it does to me.””

-
James Marsters, on the Seeing Red scene.

Uhhh

Shaming people for the choices they make about their own bodies is bad? It’s an attempt to police other people and the rights and freedoms they should have, and it feeds into a social atmosphere that dehumanizes people (especially women) to the point where attitudes like “A slut can’t be raped” or “She can’t respect her body so why should anyone else” or “She was wearing a slutty outfit so she was asking for it” or “She’s said yes so many times; how are we supposed to believe she said no this time” are all too common.

Slut-shaming forces your own moral judgments about sexual activity onto other people. What makes one a “slut” is arbitrary, and the label is used whenever the user wants to hurt, slander, or judge another person for whatever reason.

Slut shaming shames women in particular for exercising sexual agency, for enjoying sex, for exercising their right to say “yes”.

Slut shaming is bad because it’s really none of your business what goes on in someone’s bedroom, unless you’re invited into it.

Slut shaming is bad because there is nothing wrong with being a slut (whatever that is).

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: your kid might end up being perfectly fine with their lack of foreskin. Hell, they might be downright overjoyed about it it.

But they might not be. And to frivolously risk inflicting that sense of loss on someone isn’t something I’ll ever understand.

Not to mention there’s a scarily large chance of injury and/or negative side effects from the SURGERY (because it is surgery). Shouldn’t a people have some say over whether or not they’re willing to take risks with their own bodies?

Hey, girl. Remember Feminist Ryan Gosling? And Feminist Jay-Z? Well, Cthulhu ate them. However, don’t fret: turns out, he also managed to metabolize their feminism.
